First Congregational Church of Kittery
Squarespace Website Design
What We Built and Why It Worked
Kittery Point Congregational Church (UCC) came to us looking for a church website that felt as warm and welcoming as their coastal New England community. Their new Squarespace site needed to serve a lot of roles at once: a front door for visitors, a hub for members, a place to highlight historic roots, and a trustworthy pathway for online giving. We designed a custom church website that balances all of those needs in a way that feels playful, approachable, and deeply rooted in place.
The approved homepage sets the tone with a “coastal, playful, and approachable” aesthetic. A soft “sea smoke” color palette, paired with a new script font, gives the site a friendly, human feel—without sacrificing readability. A prominent drone video showcases the church’s beautiful coastal setting, helping newcomers instantly understand where the church is and what it feels like to be there on a Sunday morning. This visual storytelling is especially important for churches in destination areas like coastal Maine, where visitors often search online for a welcoming church near Kittery Point before they ever step through the door.
We built the site around a clear, intuitive sitemap: Home, Classes & Events, About, Sunday Services, Historic Site/History, Member Area, and Donate. This structure supports both curious visitors and active members. “Sunday Services” answers the most important first-time questions (where, when, what to expect), while “Classes & Events” and the Member Area make it easy for regular attenders to stay connected throughout the week. The Historic Site/History page highlights the church’s unique story and roots, honoring its place in the community while still feeling modern and easy to navigate.
Client Context
Kittery Point Congregational Church is a coastal New England UCC congregation with deep historic roots, active community life, and a desire to make visitors, neighbors, and long-time members feel equally at home.
The Challenge
The church needed a modern website that could showcase its historic building and coastal setting while still functioning as a practical tool for communication, events, and online giving. They also needed a structure that separated visitor-facing content (like Sunday services) from member resources without making the site feel complicated.
Our Strategy
We created a StoryBrand-informed sitemap centered around the real questions visitors and members ask: What is this church like? How do I get involved? How do I give? Then we layered on a “sea smoke” color palette, playful typography, and drone video to bring the coastal context to life, while using Squarespace.
What We Delivered
We launched a fully redesigned Squarespace 7.1 site with a coastal, approachable homepage featuring drone footage of the church and surrounding area. The new navigation highlights Sunday services, classes and events, historic information, a member area, and a clear Donate page. We embedded the Aplos giving form to keep donors on-site, configured an Elfsite calendar for recurring events, and pulled over only the content needed into the new structure to keep the site clean and easy to manage. The result is a New England church website that feels both timeless and up-to-date.
From Welcome to Belonging
This project shows how thoughtful church website design can blend history, hospitality, and modern functionality. By pairing clear navigation with warm visuals and integrated tools for events and giving, Kittery Point Congregational Church now has a site that truly reflects their community—and makes it easier for newcomers to move from “just looking” to feeling like they belong.
